Indra Singh - Technology for empowering Himalayan communities
Himalayan Education Foundation (HEF) scholarship recipient, Indra Singh is a 2025 graduate of Himalayan Inter College (HIC), Chaukori. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) at Kumaon University in Almora. An aspiring software developer with a passion for emerging technologies, Indra is dedicated to using digital tools and problem-solving to drive positive change in his home region. Here, he shares his story, ambitions, and reflections on life in the hills with Himalayan Voices.
—-----------------
My name is Indra Singh, and I come from the serene, mist-covered village of Chaukori in the Berinag region of Uttarakhand. Growing up surrounded by the Himalayas gave me more than just an appreciation for nature’s stillness—it taught me discipline, simplicity, and the value of perseverance.
I belong to a humble and supportive family that has always encouraged me to dream beyond our immediate horizons. My father works as a taxi driver to support us, my mother keeps our home grounded as a homemaker, and together we share a tight-knit bond alongside my younger brother, who is currently completing his schooling.
My journey toward the study of technology took shape at Himalayan Inter College (HIC), where I completed my Intermediate studies in 2025. HIC is where I had deeply supportive teachers, lasting friendships, and an environment where learning felt natural and rewarding. It was during these school years that my fascination with technology took root. I found myself curious about how computers work, how software runs behind the scenes, and how logical code can translate into real-world solutions. That persistent curiosity led me to pursue a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) at Kumaon University in Almora.
Shifting from the quiet hills to the city for my university degree opened up a dynamic new perspective. While the hills provided me with peace and connection to my roots, city life brought exposure to advanced technological resources, diverse cultures, and broader career pathways. Currently, I balance my formal BCA coursework with self-directed learning, constantly striving to sharpen my programming abilities and expand my understanding of Information Technology and problem-solving.
My long-term aspiration is to become a Software Developer—someone who builds innovative, accessible tools that simplify and improve everyday life. Looking ahead, I am eager to dive deeper into emerging domains like Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, and Software Engineering.
Beyond my personal ambitions, my heart remains deeply connected to the hill country. Living there made me acutely aware of the systemic challenges our communities endure, from youth migration and scarce employment to limited healthcare, fragile roads, and uneven access to higher education. I strongly believe that digital empowerment can help bridge these gaps. In the future, I intend to use my education and technical expertise to foster digital literacy in my home village, inspire younger students to pursue higher learning, and contribute directly to local community development.
Looking back at where I started and looking forward to where I want to go, the principles I learned at HIC continue to guide my path. To the students coming up behind me, my simple advice is to stay disciplined, believe in your potential, respect the mentors who guide you, and never stop learning—because the efforts you make today will build the future you inhabit tomorrow.
