Student Spotlight: A chat with HEF Scholar, Aryan Dhami
We had the opportunity to sit down with Aryan Dhami, a remarkable student and scholarship recipient from the Himalayan Education Foundation. Aryan, who is currently in the 12th standard at Himalaya Inter College (HIC) in Chaukori, is a true example of dedication and perseverance. A National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadet, he recently completed an intensive two-month training program to earn his 'B' certificate.
We had a chat with Aryan to learn more about his life, his aspirations, and his thoughts on the challenges and beauties of life in the Himalayas.
Q: Hi Aryan, Welcome to ‘Himalayan Vaani’. Tell us about your background.
A: I come from Seri village, about 12 kilometers from Chaukori, where I live with my family. My father is a restaurant worker, and my mother is a homemaker. I've been a student at HIC for 15 years, starting in nursery, and I'm currently in the 12th standard.
Q: Good. What subjects are you most passionate about?
A: I'm fascinated by mathematics. I enjoy solving problems, and I love how so many mathematical concepts have practical applications in our daily lives.
Q: What are your plans for higher education and a career?
A: After completing my intermediate studies, I plan to pursue a graduate degree. My dream is to join the defense services.
Q: What do you appreciate most about living and studying in the hill country?
A: Our school is literally nestled in the Himalayas, and the natural beauty here is unmatched. I also deeply appreciate the native rituals and traditions of our mountain communities; they give me a strong sense of belonging and identity.
Q: And what about city life appeals to you?
A: I believe cities offer better access to education and medical facilities, as well as more opportunities for self-improvement.
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: I love playing cricket, chess, and volleyball. I'm also passionate about bodybuilding and staying physically fit.
Q: What do you see as the biggest challenges for people in the hills?
A: A lack of proper medical facilities and limited sources of income are major challenges for our communities.
Q: What does your village need to improve the lives of its residents?
A: We need a hospital, a school, and overall economic development to improve the quality of life here.
Q: How do you hope to contribute to your village?
A: I want to contribute to the betterment of my village by helping improve medical facilities for my community.
Q: How has your NCC training benefited you?
A: The NCC has made me both physically and mentally fit. It instills discipline and helps cadets develop essential skills like leadership and teamwork. It also provides a direct path for those who want to join the defense services.
Q: What's your favorite memory from your time at HIC?
A: I have so many great memories here, especially with my friends. One of my favorite memories is from a training camp we had in Pithoragarh. I believe that school life is not just about academics; it's also about having fun with your friends and focusing on self-improvement.
