Urmila Karki: Science for a better society

A 2025 Himalayan Inter College (HIC) graduate, Urmila Karki grew up in the quiet village of Chaukori. Her father works in a transport company and mother is a home maker. She has a brother and a sister, both currently in school. She received a scholarship from Himalayan Education Foundation (HEF) while she was at HIC.

Like many students raised in the hills, she spent her school days surrounded by fresh air and a beautiful natural environment. But living in a rural hill community also meant seeing the tougher realities firsthand—limited healthcare, patchy internet, and few local jobs driving young people away.

Instead of just accepting those gaps, Urmila decided to build a bridge over them. She is currently pursuing her B.Sc. in Physics, Maths and Chemistry from Government PG college in Berinag. Her spark for technology came from a simple desire to keep learning new skills and see what the wider world has to offer.

For Urmila, mastering computers isn't just about passing exams; it's a doorway to financial independence and a way to support her family. Her main goal? Land a career in public service where she can work toward creating better infrastructure, connectivity, and opportunities for villages like her own.

When she isn't studying, Urmila keeps busy. She’s a huge fan of biographical and historical films—think 3 Idiots, Mission Mangal, and Shershaah—and loves diving into stories from the past. She loves to listen to songs from the 70's by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Playing volleyball makes her unwind and relax. She also hopes to travel much more once her studies wrap up.

Looking back on her time at HIC, Urmila fondly remembers her active participation in annual sports meets, cultural events and unforgettable NCC camps. Her advice for everyone currently sitting in those classrooms is simple:

"Make the most of your school years. Focus on your studies, try out different activities, and really cherish the time you have with your friends and teachers."

HEF wishes Urmila Karki a wonderful career and bright future.
